Crafting a truly immersive athletic environment to honor the past and train towards the future.

(opportunity)

Colorado Academy (CA), a reputable private school in Denver, came to us looking to completely reimagine their extensive campus athletic facility. I served as the lead environmental graphic designer on a large team tasked with designing then constructing this extensive complex. This was a unique opportunity for me to create a one of a kind visual experience that transcended the traditional athletic design aesthetic.

(approach)

In partnership with a new state of the art training and sports facility, the Athletic Center endeavored to uplift and honor the rich history and intense school spirit of CA through it's interior designs. Spaces were carefully crafted to reinforce an environment of openness and self-confidence, while fostering a sense of community and connection for athletes and students alike. CA branded elements, natural materials, and artifacts from the old gym(s) were just a few of many design elements employed to achieve this approach.

01 / Interior & Environmental Graphic Design

A main street for athletic excellence, and nostalgia.

(a place for community)

The anchoring element of this facility was the central corridor that ran the length of the building, aptly named "main street." This was an important point of convergence for students and the many different sports/programs taking place in the athletic center - it was going to be filled with energy. We designed custom trophy cases and large wall graphics of fellow CA athletes to line the walls and inspire students to follow in the footsteps of their peers. Graphic wayfinding elements, signage, lighting, and textured materials were used to help establish both a sense of direction and discovery for those navigating the halls.

02 / custom installations

Taking pieces from the old to transform the new.

(honoring the past)

Although the old gym was completely demolished to make space for this new construction, we felt it was important to preserve elements from the past structure(s) in order to honor the rich history of CA athletics. Flooring from the old wood basketball court, bleachers from the practice gym, and lockers from the locker room we some of the many elements that found an important place in the new interior facility. Floorboards were carefully reassembled to form unique wall installations and graphic elements, while the old bleachers were clad surrounding the snack bar to add a special texture to the interior environment.
